A day-long stakeholders’ workshop for the preliminary designs and cost estimate for the protection of the West Coast beaches and Kunta Kinteh Island was on Thursday 26th September, 2024 held at the Sunset Hotel, Cape Point.
Following the completion of the data collection and risk assessment, promising solutions were identified in a long list of options based on issues, challenges, problems, and local conditions.
The longlist of solutions was evaluated by the consultants Royal Haskoning DHV using an assessment framework that considered social, environmental, economic, and tourism factors amongst others to narrow the options to a shortlist based on a robust scoring.
In her opening remarks, Mrs. Cordu L. Jabang-Senghore, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Culture reminded the participants that in May, this year, a similar workshop was held together with the stakeholders all geared towards deepening the understanding of coastal dynamics and the practical solutions to protect and sustainably manage the coastlines and islands.
She added that protecting the coastal area and managing its biodiversity is not a task that a single organization or individual can accomplish.
“It requires a concerted effort from all, including governments, non-governmental organizations, local communities, and private enterprises by working together, we can develop and implement solutions that are not only effective but also sustainable in the long term,” she said.
The Permanent Secretary further urged the participants to embrace a sustainable and responsible approach to coastal management, one that not only preserves the natural heritages but also promotes the long-term prosperity of the coastal communities.
“I would like to express my gratitude to every one of your institutions for answering the call of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Tourism Diversification and Resilience in The Gambia Project. Your participation here is a testament to your dedication to ensuring we achieve the desired level of resilience for our palpable tourism assets. Therefore, your commitment to this noble national cause is highly appreciated,” she added.
